A Spiritual Home For All

Temple Sinai has roots that go back 47 years. The Reform Temple was created by a small group of Jewish families that recognized the need for a spiritual home.

So, they built a beautiful synagogue on Atlantic Avenue and the rest is history. But with history comes change.

And that’s a good thing. Rabbi Steven Moss would probably agree.

That’s because Rabbi Steve, who was a Rabbi at a Reform Temple on Long Island, found his way to Temple Sinai of Delray Beach two years ago. And in the two years of his rabbinate, he has transformed it into a space of kindness, caring and camaraderie.

“I have been a Rabbi for over 50 years and visited many synagogues. But I have never met friendlier warm caring individuals who want to create a positive Jewish experience for the community at large.”

He’s right.

The temple is a welcoming place where everyone is embraced and treated with respect and kindness.

Friday night Sabbath services are a place to gain wisdom and spiritual inspiration. Over 100 people attend (during season) and others stream the service online.

Saturday morning services are also a source of inspiration and support. After Shabbat worship, people sit around a table (with food) and talk. All are welcome.

Rabbi Steve believes in inclusion and education. “When I started teaching a Kabbalah Class last year, I was so impressed that so many people wanted to attend classes and get involved.”

At Temple Sinai, people of all ages are attracted to the teachings, the warmth, support and spirituality of the clergy. Members are young adults, working professionals and retirees. All are inspired by Rabbi Steve’s faith and optimism, and student Cantor Daniel Gei-german’s beautiful voice and heart.

Temple Sinai is known as a place where life is celebrated, learning is paramount and helping others is revered. But, helping others is not confined to the synagogue.

Their strong interfaith belief and connection to the community is paramount. That’s why they support CROS Ministries’ Caring Kitchen and Jewish Family Services’ Jacobson Family Food Pantry.

In addition, volunteers prepare and distribute food, clothing and toiletries to those in need in Delray Beach.

They are also collaborating with Reverend Paul Kane of St Paul’s Episcopal Church in Delray Beach (and other religious leaders) for their Annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service on Tuesday, November 19th.

Rabbi Steve is on the board of the Delray Interfaith Committee for Social Services and a Chaplain for Palm Beach County Sheriff’s office and Delray Beach Police Department.
“Everything I do in the community is an extension of the spiritual, educational and heart and soul of the temple.”

But, within the walls of Temple Sinai is also a fountain of generosity and compassion. When a member was suffering from vertigo a congregant immediately offered to walk her dog.

“Another member’s sister was in an accident out of country and a member offered his frequent flyer miles so she could be with her relative in Europe,” adds Rabbi Steve.

Part of Temple life includes activities that engage the mind, body and heart. That’s why the synagogue offers stimulating monthly Adult Education programs on Sunday afternoons (starting in November) open to the community.

They also have an active Sisterhood and Brotherhood. They have events such as poker and game night, theater outings, a Chanukah Party, a Women’s Seder and more. There’s also a popular weekly bingo game on Wednesday evenings.

If you’re looking for a Jewish Home where your spiritual, educational and social needs will be met, come to Temple Sinai.

“I am always available for support,” said Rabbi Steve. “If you are going through difficult or stressful times and need a sense of community, that is what we’re all about.”

If you want to know what living a Jewish life is all about and don’t know where to start, just ask Rabbi Steve.

“Temple Sinai is the place. We make the ordinary extraordinary.”
